The Striped Dolphin is very similar to the Common Dolphin but slightly more slender. The top half is uniformly dark and is divided from the lighter bottom half by a prominent dark line running from eye to vent. It is 6 to 8 feet long, weighs 150lbs, can swim through the water at more than 30mph and has a life span of around 25 years. Very common in the Bay of Gibraltar where they feed on sardines and shrimp.
Sadly attempts have been made to keep the Striped Dolphin in captivity. However these have all failed, with animals dying within two weeks due to failure to feed. Â Thankfully here in Gibraltar they thrive in the wild, as it should be.
